Amputations

Injuries that result in amputation, whether they are caused traumatically or become necessary during the course of treatment, are life changing. This is not only for the injured person but also their family and friends.  The future can be uncertain and the impact the injuries will have on every aspect of the injured person’s life can be daunting.  At Barr Ellison we have established a wealth of experience in dealing with these types of cases.  Whether upper or lower limb, above or below the elbow or knee, we have guided many clients through the rehabilitation process to reach the best possible outcomes.

Close Links with Experts

Due to our close links with experts in the field, we are able to provide a tailored service dealing with your individual needs – see How Osseointegration Works, for example.  No two cases are the same and every client has different priorities.  With our focus very firmly on early rehabilitation, we aim to make quick progress with early instruction of a case manager to set up a multi-disciplinary team of rehabilitation providers.  This often involves early discussions with the Defendant insurer about long term needs and establishing that the case should be conducted under the Serious Injury Guide, of which we are a signatory.

Far-reaching Implications

An amputated limb can have far-reaching implications with issues such as phantom limb pain, skin-grafting issues and pressure sores to name but a few.  However, there is often a significant psychological element to these cases which should not be underestimated and also needs addressing as early as possible.  This can include, for example, PTSD from the incident itself or adjustment disorders and depression arising from the injuries.

Long term needs

In the long term, there are likely to be additional needs in terms of housing, employment, prosthetics, treatment and care.  All of these issues, and many more, need to be considered before settlement of your claim.  Our expert lawyers are adept at identifying and incorporating these risks into any settlement achieved.

With the experience and knowledge to guide you through the legal process as you undergo what will likely be a lengthy rehabilitation process, we can work together to ensure both your immediate and long-term needs are met.
